What is NAZAP?
The Nigerian Association of Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks is a body set up to provide support for Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks in Nigeria with a view to enabling members to operate with the best and international best practices in animal care and welfare, Conservation of Nigeria’s Biodiversity, Environmental Education, Research and Global Sustainability.
In 2012, a National Workshop that was inspired by the need to upgrade all Zoos in Nigeria and make them operate with best practices, train and retrain Zoo staff was organized. This brought together all the relevant stakeholders such as Zoo/Wildlife Park operators in Nigeria, academics in relevant departments from various Universities in Nigeria, the staff of Zoo/Wildlife Parks, relevant NGOs, Veterinary Institutions, etc.
After this workshop, the need to have an umbrella body for all Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks, and related facilities in Nigeria was seen and this great Association was proposed.
