What is NAZAP?
The Nigerian Association of Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks is a body set up to provide support for Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks in Nigeria with a view to enabling members to operate with the best and international best practices in animal care and welfare, Conservation of Nigeria’s Biodiversity, Environmental Education, Research and Global Sustainability.
Our Story
In 2012, a National Workshop that was inspired by the need to upgrade all Zoos in Nigeria and make them operate with best practices, train and retrain Zoo staff was organised. This brought together all the relevant stakeholders such as Zoo/Wildlife Park operators in Nigeria, academics in relevant departments from various Universities in Nigeria, the staff of Zoo/Wildlife Parks, relevant NGOs, Veterinary Institutions, etc.
After this workshop the need to have an umbrella body for all Zoological Gardens and Wildlife Parks and related facilities in Nigeria was seen and this great Association was proposed.
About five years ago, the Elephants in the Omo Forest Reserve in Ogun State, Nigeria started moving out of the forest due to a sudden increase in farming activities in the forest and quarry activities at its outskirts. These Elephants have now found their way into Epe town in Lagos. The result of this migration has caused a major conflict between the residents of Epe town and these Elephants. Omu Resort in conjunction with the Nigerian Association of Zoological Gardens and Parks (NAZAP) presents a documentary on its expedition to discover the Elephant Armada of Epe town in Lagos, Nigeria. NAZAP Projects Focus Areas
Accreditation of all Zoos and Wildlife Facilities
NAZAP serve as a regulatory body for the setting up of zoos and related facilities in
Nigeria in conformity with acceptable standards and accreditation of all Zoos and Wildlife facilities in accordance with accepted best practices.
Gradual Termination of Obsolete Zoo Operations
This is to be achieved by transforming all accredited Zoos to Zoos without bars, where animals are kept in a semi-intensive free-range natural environment with proper enrichment to place all captive animals in conditions that are most suitable for their survival and replenishment.
Enhancing and Improving Captive Breeding among Relevant Facilities
NAZAP is set to achieve this by sourcing for the fund to aid improved feeding of endangered wildlife species in relevant facilities while embarking on efficient animal exchange and leasing programme for proper pairing and regrouping to improve genetic pools among captive breed species e.t.c.
Promoting Conservation Education
Conservation Clubs are being formed across various levels of education in Nigeria. Currently, 232 Conservation Clubs have been inaugurated.
