Bird migration is one of the most fascinating biological instincts in the animal kingdom. Many birds travel hundreds of thousands of miles at the change of the season, most of them returning to the exact same location each year – even down to a specific back yard!
On World Migratory Bird Day, we want to focus on the largest threats to migrating birds: artificial light. Most birds do their long-distance flights during the night. Migrating birds can be attracted to high levels of artificial light, and millions of migrating birds are killed each year by colliding with buildings and other built infrastructure.
International efforts are underway to reduce the impact of light pollution on migrating birds. You can your part by keeping lights to a minimum during the crucial migration times.
Together let’s “Dim the Lights for Birds at Night” to help them on their inspiring journeys!!
